As the 3-year-old preps heat up and dreams turn toward roses on the first Saturday in May, Starlight Racing has two colts who are giving us a lot to be excited about.
Charlatan won in his debut, a maiden allowance race at Santa Anita on Sunday, Feb. 16th and earned a 105 Beyer, completing 6 furlongs in 1:08.85 on his way to a TDN Rising Star honor. His Beyer number was the second highest figure of 2020 of any horse, any age. His next race is yet to be determined.
Authentic , now 2 for 2 after winning on debut at Del Mar and then coming back to win the G3 Sham Stakes in January, is pointed to the G2 San Felipe Stakes on March 7.
Both colts are stabled in California and trained by Bob Baffert.
The StarLadies Racing fillies have names!
- Malibu Moon–Lady Lioness has been named Jordan’s Leo .
- Flatter–Bodee Beautiful filly is now Flatterful .
- Tonalist–Sophie Sophie filly is Sophiery (pronounced so fiery, pictured above).
We were able to see these three beautiful fillies in training when we visited them at Payton Training Center in Ocala, Florida on Feb. 15th. Click here to see them in the early stages of their training.
The following morning our first stop was at Payton Training Center to see the two year olds we have in training there.
Stop number two took us to Eddie Woods’ Training Center, also in Ocala, FL (see photo above). Both training centers are filled with talent and inspire hope for great things to come.

Feature: What’s In A Name?
Charlatan is a rising star for both Starlight Racing and the Thoroughbred Daily News. So why the name… Charlatan (defined as: a person falsely claiming to have a special knowledge or skill; a fraud)?
His name came out of a conversation with one of our Louisville, KY partners. He and a group of friends were discussing a fellow they all knew to varying degrees. One of the people said, “He’s a charlatan.” To which one of our partners replied, “What? I thought he was from Louisville.” (Come on, we’ve all had those moments!)
Hence… Charlatan. At this stage we can only hope that he is neither a fraud nor an imposter but he has certainly inspired a great story and a good laugh – and some colorful dreams.
Our 2019 partnerships are officially closed and we are excited about all of our racing prospects!
Join a winning team in 2020!
If you missed out on our 2019 opportunities then prepare to join us this year. We will not be solidifying our 2020 partnerships until July-September 2020 but it’s never too early to inquire. If you are interested in becoming a Starlight or StarLadies Racing partner, please reach out to Donna Barton Brothers with interest or inquiries as soon as possible.
Please note that we are creating a brand new website for Starlight Racing so it may be down for a short period of time over the next couple of months.
