Al Stall, Jr.

Trainer

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Al Stall, Jr. comes from a family with multiple generations of some of the finest horsemen the south has ever produced, and with thoroughbred race horses firmly in his blood. Stall’s father and grandfather both were breeders and owners, and his father, Albert Stall Sr., is a member of the Fair Grounds Hall of Fame. Stall Sr., was also a former Chairman of the Louisiana Racing Commission, a post he held for 28 years.

With racing firmly in his blood, Al worked at the track as a teen and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in geology from Louisiana State University. During and after college, he worked for the Pel-Tex Oil Company, but when that company sold, he returned to racing. Among his mentors were Hall of Fame trainer, Jack Van Berg, and Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame trainer, Frank Brothers.

Some of Stall’s biggest moments as a trainer include his historic 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic win, with acclaimed sire, Blame. As many know, Blame beat the previously undefeated and extremely popular champion mare, Zenyatta in this race. Blame then went on to finish out the year as Champion Older Male and now stands stud at the prestigious Claiborne Farm in Versailles, Kentucky.

Other notable horses that Stall has trained include: Tom’s d’Etat, Apart, Vexed, Departing and Central Banker. Stall consistently places in the top 100 Trainer rankings and has done so since 2005.

Stall splits his time between New Orleans and Louisville, with his wife Nicole, and children, Albert III and Greta.
