A Fun And Intimate Partnership For Winning Women
Laurie Wolf founded StarLadies Racing in 2013. With more than a decade of owning horses at the highest levels of the sport, Laurie was uniquely primed. She saw a disconnect in public perceptions surrounding women in racing, and this partnership proves them wrong!
“Maybe it seems like it’s male-dominated, but from the top to the bottom, we’ve got women that own farms, do breeding, do consigning, work the sales companies, are owners, trainers or assistant trainers,” says Wolf. “There are so many women in this industry. We’re here and we all know we’re here. It’s like the outside world doesn’t really notice that. We are trying to get that across to the next generation—helping them, giving them a leg up, giving them contacts.”Laurie Wolf, Managing Partner of StarLadies Racing. “StarLadies Racing: Meet The Women Behind This Female-Only Horse Ownership Group” Saratoga Living, July 30, 2018
We’re tremendously proud of our StarLadies stable, and we strive to achieve (and even surpass) these impressive numbers every year. We make it into the winner’s circle with our fillies!
Starladies Horses: Outstanding Runners
We select our fillies with the goal of developing them into the elite athletes they were bred to become. Then. after their racing careers, our graduates have the bloodlines and performance records to send them to successful breeding careers.
- Eskenformoney Career earnings: $757,616. Our multiple graded stakes winning and stakes placed filly that put StarLadies on the map. She won the Rampart Stakes and the Turnback The Alarm Stakes. Both are grade III races. Our StarLadies team cheered her on to placing in more than a half dozen graded stakes. Quite simply, she was amazing!
- Firsthand Report Career earnings: $331,395. Our filly that romped over the boys in the Alphabet Soup Stakes. StarLadies felt quite satisfied after that very special win! Firsthand Report’s major wins include the Alphabet Soup Stakes, the Power by Far Stakes and the Lyphard Stakes.
- Takechargedelilah Career earnings: $260,390. An Ohio-bred (our colt Harlan’s Holiday, was also an Ohio-bred,) Takechargedelilah was the winner of one of Ohio’s top stakes: the Best of Ohio Distaff.
- Tonasah Career earnings: $196,660. Tonasah is our multiple graded stakes placed filly who ended her career with a win. She went on to broodmare-duty with Stonestreet, selling in the Keeneland November sale for $385,000. She was popularized by Paulick Report’s Natalie Voss, who wrote this endearing article.
- Orbolution Career earnings: $164,150. Our graded stakes–winning, and graded stakes-placed filly that was a Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf participant in 2017! She sold to Hinkle Farms at the Fasig-Tipton Summer Select for $325,000.
As you can see from our champions list, our fillies retire to some of the most respected breeding operations in the industry. Winstar Farm, is one of those organizations, and the current home of Eskenformoney. Stonestreet and Hinkle are the same. It is thanks to fine mares like these, that our breed and sport continues to improve.

While StarLadies company headquarters are based in Kentucky, our partner-base isn’t. We have a small but diverse group, and our partners range from working full time to being retired. We also have women involved in advocacy, entrepreneurship, and other interesting endeavors. We have members of all ages, too–from grandmothers to granddaughters, and StarLadies partners that live all over the country.
We like to think of ourselves as a coterie of women. We’re a small and intimate partnership of women who are passionate about our sport. Along the way, we have grown to become close friends and we’re always welcoming, with open arms, more women into racing. We also love our outings and our horses. In short, we are a sisterhood. Our Office Manager Debbie Smith, and our Chief Operating Officer Donna Brothers are all lifelong horsewomen, and deeply passionate about the sport.
When it’s time to go to the races, our partners fly in from all points, and we have the time of our lives cheering our fillies on. StarLadies will make sure you’re staying at recommended hotels and eating at restaurants the locals recommend. On race-day, you’ll get the best seats, whether that’s a clubhouse suite, a box, or fine dining.
You can guess what unites us at Starladies: a grand passion for thoroughbreds and the sport of horse racing.
StarLadies In The International Arena
StarLadies horses compete at premier meets across the country, and now the globe. In 2019, Laurie Wolf created two new divisions: StarLadies France and StarLadies Australia, teaming up with Anna Seitz and It’s All About the Girls Racing. Together, our two teams bought a lovely Intello filly in France, and a wonderful No Nay Never filly in Australia.
Our French filly is currently in Chantilly, training with Nicholas Clement. He is a leading trainer in France, and has achieved career-earnings of more than €30M. He is also the youngest trainer to ever win the Prix Arc de Triomphe.
Our Australian filly is currently undergoing her young horse development training, and will soon be headed to multiple Group 1 winning Australian trainer, Anthony Freedman.
Chantilly, where our filly is training, is an hour outside of Paris. It is considered the center of French racing, with Chantilly Racecourse, and the stunning 18th century chateau, Domaine de Chantilly, just a stone’s-throw away.
Our 2019 inaugural year also marked StarLadies’ first trip to France. It was a fantastic trip with the Ladies getting to watch Glamoureuse train, while taking in the sights and the gastronomic delights. We had an all-around, insider’s trip visiting with our French counterparts!
It was so much fun to see what French racing at its finest was all about and we hope you join us on our next international trip. Was there a wine tasting? Yes, yes there was!
This Investor Guide by Aushorse, highlights many of the reasons that Australia has proven to be such an attractive investment arena for global bloodstock players.
These international endeavors are a truly unique and innovative syndicate-experience. We feel fortunate to be at the forefront of it, and look forward to the start of these new segments developing champion race horses.
As a partner, we hope you’ll join us at the historic tracks we run at. When StarLadies partners get together, we cheer our fillies on and make lasting friendships along the way. We’re serious about our horses but we’re serious about our fun as well!
From Young Horse Development to Our Most Aggressive Campaign Schedules, Oversight by StarLadies’ Industry Experts
StarLadies’ history while young, is a history of excellence in the making. From our purchase of yearlings at the most exclusive sales auctions in North America, to our elite national campaign schedules–StarLadies has oversight at every stage of our fillies’ development.
We occasionally buy into horses that are already at the track. However, our focus at StarLadies is to find the promising young thoroughbred fillies of tomorrow. That search leads us to primarily purchase young fillies before they are started under saddle.
At the Auctions
Our yearling purchasing season starts in July at the Fasig-Tipton sale in Lexington. We also attend the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select sale in August. In the fall, we end our buying season with a finale at Keeneland’s September Sale.
At any of these sales, you’ll be sure to find Jack and Laurie Wolf, and Frank Brothers, with their heads together and catalogs in hand!
Young Horse Development
From the sales, we send our fillies to Jake (“J.J.”) Pletcher’s Payton Training Center in Ocala, Florida. J.J. is a renowned expert in young horse development. Once there, they are given time to mature. This is a crucial stage of development.
After our babies have gained the mental and physical maturity to begin training they will begin the process of getting used to saddle and rider. Once the fillies have mastered this stage they begin light exercise on his six furlong training track, and galloping in groups of two or three. After passing through this phase, they are given their first exposure to starting gates—slowly at first, just walking up to and around them and then eventually, through them.
Off To The Races
When our 2-year-olds are ready to begin their careers as high performance sport-horses, we send them to Todd Pletcher. Todd is a man many recognize as one of the most successful thoroughbred trainers of all time. To date, he has been awarded seven Eclipse Awards and ten North American Leading Trainer titles (by money earned). He also holds more than 70 Leading Trainer titles at individual tracks throughout North America. Todd is one of the most decorated trainers of all time and these are just a few of his accolades.
Top jockeys including Hall of Fame riders John Velazquez, Mike Smith, and Javier Castellano, are typically aboard StarLadies’ horses.
Our team includes highly esteemed bloodstock agent, conformation expert, and former top trainer, Frank Brothers. Our advising veterinarian, Dr. Foster Northrop DVM, is on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP).
We feel blessed to work with these experts. We have an all-star team and that’s a big part of our stellar performance from year to year. Their time and expertise produces a standard of excellence we pass on to our partners, and our consistent performance shows the success of that strategy.
Reach for the Stars
StarLadies is a benefactor of racing and a custodian of the thoroughbred sport horse. We are committed to preserving the breed and the sport for future generations. Our partners share in that perspective, and they believe in and love our sport as much as we do.
We don’t just buy and race our fillies. Laurie Wolf, and our all-star cast of staff remain active in the industry. That commitment ensures you get everything you need to participate in (and enjoy) this thrilling sport at the highest levels. Getting to meet like-minded women whose passion for racing is just as great as yours, is a plus.
When you join StarLadies, you become a part of our family. Laurie likes to say that we are a coterie of women, and we truly are!
StarLadies strives to eliminate the stress of overseeing the day-to-day running of an expensive and time-consuming private operation. We also are fortunate to have low partner turnover, which means our buy-in season can be competitive. Some of our members have been with us since the beginning. We believe that is a good indication of the level of our delivery, and the consistency of our service and performance.
When to Join*
Our partner buy-in season opens from May to July, and closes in August. Please let us know of your interest in joining Starlight or StarLadies any time of year, and join our newsletter to keep abreast of share-availability, news, and events.
*Buy-ins occur on a yearly basis and are for partnership horses purchased in that year only. This allows us to keep our partner-base intimate while passing on the greatest benefit possible to our partners. Please also see our FAQs page to learn more about pricing and how our model works.
