Consistent Benchmark Performance, Unmatched Delivery to Partners
Starlight is raising the bar in thoroughbred partnerships. With one of the most sparkling records in the sport of thoroughbred racing, Starlight has achieved consistent success in the elite Grade I sphere for 20 years and running. This remarkable accomplishment wouldn’t be possible without the vision and values of our leadership, the commitment of our expert staff, and our team’s unswerving dedication to competing (and winning!) at the highest levels.

Join us, and let this become a part of your history (it's just the short-list of statistics we’re very proud of!) We strive to achieve these records every year, consistently providing our partners with the highest level of prestige and amenity available in the industry.
We consistently rate in the top five of North American owner's lists in terms of syndicate performance, and have consistently ranked in the top 100 of overall owner's rankings in North America for the last 20 years. According to Ownerview.com’s 2019 syndicate-rankings, Starlight Racing was fourth in the country in terms of total earnings. Comparing our 75 starts in 2019, to the three leading syndicates, that's not too bad! They earned their premiere rankings with 229, 366 and 383 starts, respectively.
Over our twenty year history, our horses finish in the money, on average, 52% of the time. In 2019, we finished 51% in the money, and in 2018 we finished a whopping 71% in the money. As owners, our 22% win average over a 20-year period is impressive!

The Start of Starlight Racing
Starlight Racing was born out of Starlight Stables, which was founded in 2000 as the culmination of founding partners, Jack and Laurie Wolf’s virtually lifelong interest in thoroughbreds and horse racing. That first year, the Wolf’s purchased six yearlings at the Fasig-Tipton July Sale in Kentucky.
Among those six horses was a very special yearling the Wolfs would name Harlan’s Holiday.
Harlan's Holiday was a colt that ran with his heart on his sleeve. He amassed $3.6M in earnings, and won three grade 1 stakes races, and was second in the Dubai World Cup. At the time, it was the world’s richest race.
Harlan's Holiday spent his breeding career standing stud at Airdrie and Winstar. Like his racing career, his stud career was decorated with successes. In 2012, Harlan's Holiday became Champion Juvenile Sire, an achievement that again, put him in the lime-light. This incredible colt that went on to become an incredible sire, fueled Jack and Laurie’s passion, and that passion never left them. He remains a source of inspiration that continues to drive Starlight and StarLadies Racing to this day.
Starlight Stables changed to Starlight Racing in 2002 when Jack and Laurie formed their first racing partnerships. Fast forward to today: we've now had over thirty graded stakes champions run in our famous blue and yellow silks. It's a process that begins at the most elite auction houses in North America in order to acquire yearlings with the finest bloodlines and potential.
Starlight horses have competed—and continue to compete—at premier meets across the globe, from the exclusive North American meets in Kentucky, New York, Florida, and California, to the richest races in Dubai, UAE.
Post Racing Breeding Careers
Starlight’s influence doesn’t end with our horses' racing careers. Our equine graduates often have performance records strong enough to send them on to internationally successful breeding careers at some of the most historic, and respected breeding operations in the world. Winstar Farm, Coolmore Stud, Airdrie, and Claiborne Farm are a few of those lauded organizations. These are breeding organizations that continually strive to improve, are always at the cutting edge, and we’re proud to work with them.
This success has allowed our horses to stand in the United States, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and South America. Our horses become top performing broodmares and sires, and they're influencing the quality of breeding within the sport at its highest echelons.
Starlight: A Recipe For Excellence
The history of Starlight’s horses is a history of excellence. From our purchase of yearlings at the most exclusive sales auctions in North America, to their elite national and international campaign schedules, we have oversight at every stage of our horses’ development. Then, thanks to their successes, and top bloodlines, many of them enter into highly successful post-racing careers in breeding.
Our partners range in age from Millennials to octogenarians, and they live in New York, Kentucky, Illinois, Florida, Texas, California, and multiple states in-between. They arrive from all points when it's time to go to the races.
We have the time of our lives cheering our horses on, and Starlight will make sure you’re staying at recommended hotels and eating at restaurants the locals recommend. We have the connections to ensure you'll be getting the best seats in the house. Our partners are usually found enjoying company together in a suite, a box, or one of the finer dining rooms.
You can guess what unites us at Starlight: a grand passion for thoroughbreds and the sport of horse racing!
From Young Horse Development to Our Most Aggressive Campaign Schedules, Oversight by Starlight’s Industry Experts
We occasionally buy into horses that are already at the track, but our focus at Starlight is to find promising young thoroughbred stars of tomorrow. That search leads us to primarily purchase young horses before they are started under saddle.
At The Auctions
Our yearling purchasing season starts in July at the Fasig-Tipton sale in Lexington. Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Select sale in August is our next stop, and in the fall, we end our buying season with a finale at Keeneland’s September Sale.
Young Horse Development
From the sales, we send our Starlight-only yearlings to Jake ("J.J.”) Pletcher’s Payton Training Center in Ocala, Florida. J.J. is a renowned expert in young horse development. Once there, they are given time to mature. This is a crucial stage of development.
After our babies have gained the mental and physical maturity to begin training they will begin the process of getting used to saddle and rider. Once the horses have mastered this stage they begin light exercise on his six furlong training track, and galloping in groups of two or three. After passing through this phase, they are given their first exposure to starting gates—slowly at first, just walking to and around them and then, eventually, through them.
Off to the Races
With that foundation, the majority of our Starlight main-division horses go to Todd Pletcher. Todd holds seven Eclipse Awards, ten Leading North American Trainer titles (money earned), and 70 individual track-titles for leading trainer. He is one of the most decorated trainers of all time and these are just a few of his accolades!
In addition to our horses in this division training with Todd Pletcher, we send horses to Al Stall, Jr.. Al is well-established, well-regarded, and the Breeders’ Cup Classic winning trainer of Blame and Departing. Top jockeys for us include Hall of Fame riders John Velazquez, Mike Smith, and Javier Castellano.
Our team includes highly esteemed bloodstock agent, conformation expert, and former top trainer, Frank Brothers. Our advising veterinarian, Dr. Foster Northrop DVM, is on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP).
Our Starlight West horses go through this same process of post-sales decompression and then early training at a farm in Ocala, Florida. These horses go to Eddie Woods who, like J.J. Pletcher, has a state of the art training facility. Once they are nearly ready to run, the majority of these horses will travel to California and be placed with Bob Baffert at either his Santa Anita or Los Alamitos division.
Baffert has won 15 American Classic races, including a sweep of the Triple Crown in 2015 with American Pharoah and then again in 2018 with Justify. He’s also won 15 Breeders’ Cup races and holds four Eclipse Awards as the Nation’s Leading Trainer. Baffert is one of the mostly widely recognized names in horse racing, and these are just a handful of his many achievements.
We feel blessed to work with these experts. We have an all-star team and that's a big part of our stellar performance from year to year. Their time and expertise produces a standard of excellence we pass on to our partners.
Our consistent national ranking and performance records shows the success of our strategy.
